Many research names are working labels that spell out a method. Hugging Face's documentation describes GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) as a model that trains a Transformer decoder to predict the next word and is then fine-tuned on labeled data. The GPT-4 technical report, submitted to arXiv on March 15, 2023, uses the same logic: it calls the model "Transformer-based" and pre-trained to predict the next token in a document.
